The impact of technology intervention on organizations and end users’ digital engagement

New technologies emerge rapidly and two challenging decisions are the applicability of new technology to a firm and the capability of a firm to motivate user engagement as well as build customer loyalty. The main purpose of this dissertation is to understand the impact of technology intervention on organizations and users’ digital engagement from perspectives of corporate-level, individual-level, and community-level. The first study aims to apply a case study method to examine the applicability of new technology (blockchain) and how organizational costs transform. The framework provides companies a guideline to evaluate the applicability of new technology and predict organization boundaries. The second study aims to develop an enhanced action design research (ADR) process to identify users’ behavioral patterns and their adherence to a plan through a mHealth app. The principles learned from this study can be applied to improve the effectiveness of mHealth apps. The third study aims to empirically tests the interaction between online users in an online support group and its impact on members’ subsequent engagement. This study expects to document empirical evidence of behavioral heterogeneity and the value of interpersonal sentiment interaction, from a large dataset, in improving the health of an online support group. This study also presents valuable findings for platform facilitators and healthcare workers and has implications for platform design.
