A forward model for ionospheric soundings and its use with incoherent scatter radar data to obtain ionospheric plasma density profiles
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis thesis studies the inverse problem of obtaining the electron profile of the ionosphere from backscattering data from ISR (incoherent scatter radar) and ionogram from ionosonde. To solve the inverse problem, we built a forward model for ionosonde sounding of the equatorial ionosphere. The Valley experiment utilizing both the ISR and VIPIR ionosonde (vertical incidence pulsed ionospheric radar) was conducted at Jicamarca Radio Observatory. From the Valley experiment, we collected information about Faraday rotation using the ISR data, and ionograms generated using the VIPIR ionosonde. Both the forward model and the Faraday rotation are used jointly to do the inversion on the ionogram and backscatter radar data to infer the E-region ionospheric electron density.
