Enzymatic Sulfurylation Mechanisms

<p>Sulfate activation and transfer to lipids, polysaccharides, and aminoalkyl phenols have been studied In a variety of biological systems. The transfer of S<sup>35</sup>O<sub>4</sub> from radioactive 3'-phosphoadenoslne 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS<sup>35</sup>) into lipid-soluble material has been investigated in cell-free preparations of rat brain and liver. In brain of 10-20 day old rats activity was found in the particulate fraction of the homogenate, whereas in young adult rat liver activity resided in the supernatant fraction (105,000 x g). In both systems incorporation was stimulated by the addition of a crude mixture of the isomers of N-acetyl sphingosine. Evidence accumulated suggesting that the radioactive sulfolipids produced by these two system were probably different.</p>
