Exploring the neural link between performance monitoring and emotional responses to social exclusion : an EEG study in an adolescent sample

dc:description.abstractAdolescence is a time of increased sensitivity and vulnerability to social exclusion experiences. The present study aimed to examine whether neural responses to social exclusion were correlated with neural components of performance monitoring in adolescents. A sample of participants aged 14–16 (M = 14.85, SD = 0.81) conducted three tasks, baseline measure, Go/No-Go task, and the Cyberball paradigm. ERP components were extracted from EEG measures, P3 and LPP for the Cyberball paradigm, and ERN and Pe for the Go/No-Go task. Preliminary correlational analyses and regression analyses were performed on the ERP components of Cyberball and Go/No-Go. The analyses yielded no significant results, however several limitations may have influenced the findings. Exploratory linear mixed model analyses comparing ERP amplitudes across task conditions were then conducted. Despite nonsignificant findings, this study may contribute to expanding evidence that cognitive processes, such as performance monitoring, might depend on emotional contexts, such as social exclusion.
