Corona crisis effects on Icelandic sport clubs in terms of human resource, finance and structural capacity
Abstract
dc:description.abstractManaging a sport club has become more complex over the years and no longer realistic to put all the work on volunteers. Sport clubs are having troubles getting the financial and human resources they need, to serve their members. Troubles with financial capacity can have negative effects on human resource, and infrastructure and process capacities, and vice versa. Corona crisis decreased sport clubs’ income and put extra pressure on volunteers. The study explores organizational capacity at Icelandic sport clubs and their preparedness for crisis using an adapted organizational capacity model. Participants were six Icelandic community sport clubs of various size and age, and from different sports. Main findings of the study were that the Corona crisis affected the sport clubs by increasing uncertainty in their operation. Regardless of clubs’ financial status before the pandemic they all were in okay or good situation after the pandemic thanks to extra subsidy from the government. To be better prepared for a new crisis it would probably be beneficial for clubs to secure a long-term funding and it could help to have written policy about how to respond. This study adds to sport management knowledge in Icelandic sport clubs and future research could study organizational capacity deeper by doing interviews.
