Physical performance of football players in the Icelandic male top league The objective of this study was to investigate the physical performance parameters (total distance covered, sprint distance, sprints, top speed, and high-intensity sprints of male players in the Icelandic Top league (Pepsi Max League). One hundred eight football players from the Icelandic top division participated in the study. The players came from seven teams, and the age range was from 18 to 37 years old. Five of the teams played eighteen games and two of them seventeen; the total observation was 756. A GPS tracking system from Catapult, Playertek by Catapult, was used. One-way ANOVA - Post hoc Tukey test was performed to measure physical performance from various playing positions on the field. The results showed differences between playing positions; central defenders covered the lowest distance in all speed zones and the wide midfielders the highest. The results demonstrate that physical demands are highly influenced by playing positions. This research makes an essential contribution to the Icelandic football literature. They provided insights from players’ activity and physical demands during match play and how they vary by playing positions. Keywords: GPS - Football - Playing positions
