Factor analytic study of semantic differentiel ratings by bilinguals
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe present study reports data on the semantic differential for French-English balanced bilinguals. Two hundred and sixty-five concepts varying on the abstractness-concreteness continuum were rated on 18 scales by 100 Ss. Profiles of mean scale values for each concept, factor scores and the semantic structure are presented. Factor sets for subgroups, compounds and coordinates, were obtained and the similarity of semantic structures compared. Little congruency was found between the two subgroups. For Compounds, the results suggest on factor I a convergence of Impressiveness (or Activity) with the Evaluative dimension. Factors II and III were respectively Concreteness and Potency. Five factors were obtained for coordinates: Evaluative, Potency, Impressiveness, Concreteness and Specificity.
