A Study of Characteristics and Professional Preparation of Teachers For the Gifted and Talented in the State of Missouri

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the educational and experiential backgrounds of teachers and administrators of the gifted; and, to establish the need for more college and university programs with an emphasis on education of the gifted. The data were gathered from the teachers and administrators involved in the 1980-81 school term of the sixty-nine state assisted programs for the gifted, in the state of Missouri. The data gathered from the two groups were compared by using the statistical package (SPSSV8) processed through the Computer Center, Springfield, Missouri. The analysis of the data indicated that the Missouri teachers and administrators were much better educated than those in an earlier national survey. The conclusions were that although these teachers and administrators are better qualified, many feel they would benefit by updating their present education or improving the educational knowledge in the area of education for the gifted and talented.
