A Study of Elementary Social Studies Textbook Selection Guidelines: Their Importance as Perceived By Elementary Principals and Their Relationship to Reading

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study was conducted to learn from a review of research and related literature some of the qualities of textbooks which make them more easily read, comprehended, and studied. The information collected was then compared to the responses made by 187 elementary principals in southwest Missouri as to the guidelines they perceived to be most important in the selection of elementary social studies textbooks. From a descriptive analysis of the 104 responses to the questionnaire, it was learned that readability was ranked quite high. Factors pertaining to reading perception and textbook organization were considered important, but not to the same degree as readability.
