ΑΝΟΣΟΚΥΤΤΑΡΟΧΗΜΙΚΗ ΜΕΛΕΤΗ ΤΟΥ ΑΓΓΕΙΟΚΙΝΗΤΙΚΟΥ ΠΟΛΥΠΕΠΤΙΔΙΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΕΝΤΕΡΟΥ, ΤΗΣ ΧΟΛΗΚΥΣΤΟΚΙΝΙΝΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΝΕΥΡΟΠΕΠΤΙΔΙΟΥ Υ ΣΤΟ ΚΕΝΤΡΙΚΟ ΝΕΥΡΙΚΟ ΣΥΣΤΗΜΑ, ΤΟΥ ΣΚΑΝΤΖΟΧΟΙΡΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΒΑΤΟΥ
Abstract
dc:descriptionIN THE PRESENT STUDY THE MORPHOLOGY AND REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF VASOACTIVE INTESTINAL POLYPEPTIDE (VIP)-, CHOLECYSTOKININ (CCK)- AND NEUROPEPTIDE Y (NPY)- CONTAINING NEURONS IN THE CNS OF THE HEDGEHOG AND SHEEP, WERE INVESTIGATED USING AN IMMUNOCYTOCHEMICAL METHOD. A TOTAL OF THIRTY-TWO HEDGEHOGS AND TWENTY-FOUR SHEEP OF BOTH SEXES WERE USED. FROZEN CORONAL SECTIONS OF THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD WERE PROCESSED FOR IMMUNOCYTOCHEMICAL STAINING ACCORDING TO (PAP) METHOD. VIP-IMMUNOREACTIVE BIPOLAR AND MULTIPOLAR PERIKARYA WERE OBSERVED IN HOMOLOGOUS BRAIN STRUCTURES SUCH AS CEREBRAL CORTEX, HIPPOCAMPAL FORMATION, HYPΟTHALAMUS, CENTRAL GRAY SUBSTANCE OF THE MIDBRAIN BOTH IN THE HEDGEHOG AND THE SHEEP. IN THE CEREBRAL CORTEX VIP- NEURONS WERE LOCATED IN ALL LAYERS BUT WERE CONCENTRATED IN LAYERS II AND III. THE MAJORITY OF THEM WERE TYPICAL BIPOLAR. CCK-NEURONS WERE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED IN THE HEDGEHOG AND THE SHEEP BRAIN BUT WERE MORE NUMEROUS IN THE CEREBRAL CORTEX, HIPPOCAMPAL FORMATION, AND HYPOTHALAMUS. THE LOCALIZATION OF CCK-CONTAINING NEURONS IN THE NEOSTRIATUM OF BOTH SPECIES CONFIRMS PREVIOUS INDICATIONS FOR THE EXISTENCE OF SUCH NEURONS WHEREAS THE GREAT NUMBER OF CCK- CONTAINING NEURONS IN THE DORSAL AND THE LATERAL AREA OFTHE HEDGEHOG HYPOTHALAMUS, IS A FINDING WHICH HAS NOT BEEN REPORTED IN OTHERSPECIES. FINALLY THE MORPHOLOGY AND THE DISTRIBUTION PATTERN OF NPY-NEURONS EXHIBIT SIMILARITIES IN THE TWO MAMMAL'S MAINLY IN THE STRIATUM, HIPPOCAMPAL FORMATION, AND HYPOTHALAMUS. HOWEVER SOME SPECIES RELATED DIFFERENCES WERE NOTICED. THE RESULTS OF PRESENT STUDY SHOW THE WIDE DISTRIBUTION OF THE ABOVE PEPTIDES IN THE CNS OF THE HEDGEHOG AND SHEEP, ALREADY REPORTED IN OTHER SPECIES AND CONFIRM THEIR WIDESPREAD PHYLOGENTIC DISTRIBUTION. MOREOVER, THE MORPHOLOGYAND DISTRIBUTION OF THE PEPTIDERGIC NEURONS STUDIED DISPLAY BASIC SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE MAMMALS AND THIS MAY INDICATE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A CERTAIN PEPTIDE AND A CERTAIN FUNCTIONAL ACTIVITY OF THE BRAIN.
