Η επίδραση ορθοπεδικών δυνάμεων στο κρανιοπροσωπικό σύμπλεγμα και την κροταφογναθική διάρθρωση
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe purpose of this study was to find and evaluate the changes of the dental and skeletal elements of the craniofacial complex, with special emphasis on the temporomandibular joint, in patients treated with the activator and the chin-cup appliances. For this: 1. A group of selected 20 patients aged from 8-13 years with skeletal class II div. I .malocclusion was studied before and after 1-11/2 years of treatment with the activator, using lateral cephalometric X-rays and tomographies of the T.M.J. 2. A group of selected 20 patients aged from 7-11 years with skeletal class III malocclusion was studied before and after 1-1% years of treatment with the chin-cup appliance using lateral cephalometric X-rays and tomographies of the T.M.J. 3. In a group of 20 young people aged from 7-13 years with harmonic skeletal profil and normal occlusion, lateral cephalometric Xrays and tomographies of the T.M.J, were taken at the beginning of this study and 1'/2 years later. This group was used as control group. The method comprised detailed cephalometric linear and angularmeasurements, linear measurements and measurements of the surface of the condyle in the tomographies, before and after treatment, in all three groups. Also, it comprised statistical analysis of the data through descriptive statistics and correlation matrices, while the statistical significance of the differences between the groups, before and after treatment, was tested by the T-test. The findings of this study lead to the following conclusions: 1. The activator and the chin-cup appliances have an orthopedic effect on young people aged from 7-13 years as proven by the skeletal changes in the craniofacial complex and the T.M.J. The action of the two appliances on these structures is exactly opposite. 2. In the patients treated with the activator, a forward and downward movement of the mandible was observed an, on the contrary, a backward and upward movement of the mandible was noticed in the patients treated with the chin-cup. 3. The condyle does not regain its original position in the glenoid fossa after treatment in the-activator patients, probably because of the transformation and movement of the surface of the glenoid fossa in a downward direction. 4. The cranial base angle in the patients treated with activator diminished, while in the patients treated with chin-cup remained analtered, or increased slightly. 5. The growth of the head of the condyle in the patients treated with chin-cup seemed to be retarded. 6. The thickness of the genial symphysis in the patients treated with activator increased, while it decreased in the patients treated with chincup. 7. The labial inclination of the anterior mandibular teeth was increased in the patients submitted to activator treatment and decreased in the patients undergoing the chin-cup treatment.
