The optimisation of protocols for the extraction of nuclear DNA from animal bone forPCR.

The general aims of this research were to find an effective method for extracting DNA from bone and to use this methodology to create Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA- Polymerase Chain Reaction (RAPD-PCR) profiles of different species. A modified Chelex method was selected as the preferred extraction procedure and RAPD-PCR profiles were created for several species using a number of different primers. Individuality between closely related species was also achieved. This research could go on to help in the archaeological field with identifj'ing unknown bone fragments.
