Proteolytic degradation is a central feature of the cellular remodelling in wounds during healing. The regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (a key superfamily of proteases involved in the above process) by wound healing components is an area of ongoing investigation. However, a systematic study of the exposure of the human derived vascular cells - endothelial cells, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and macrophages - to well defined ECM (collagen type I, III and IV and laminin) and wound healing matrix proteins (fibrin and plasma fibronectin) has not yet beeen carried out.
