Abstract
dc:description.abstractHuman Resource Management's responsibility is to serve as a modulator on the work climate. This thesis aimed to perform a quantitative assessment of perceived autonomy support (PAS) of co-workers and the managers' characteristics. In this single case study, the participants (n=39) were employees from the logistics department at IKEA, Aarhus. The co-workers (n=35) and the co-managers (n=4) completed each validated questionnaire. Work Climate Questionnaire (WCQ) measuring co-workers' PAS and Problems at Work (PAW) measuring autonomy support of the co-managers. The mean ratings of the 15 items in the WCQ were 5.1. There was a statistically significant difference between female 5.4 (SD ± 0.55) and male 5.0 (SD ± 0.60), (p=0.007) co-workers as well between age group 21-24 years, 4.9 (SD ± 0.62) and 25-54 years, 5.3 (SD ± 0.59), (P = 0.01). The PAW mean ratings of the four groups after weighting was 1.7 (9.5%) is highly controlling, 2.6 (14.5%) in moderately controlling, 5.5 (31%) in moderately anonymous supportive, and 8 (45%) in the highly autonomy-supportive group. The results indicated a moderate to a high level of autonomy support in the co-manager group. However, perceived autonomy support in the co-worker group was moderately above average PAS, more pronounced by females and less by the younger age group. There seem to be potentials for the co-managers to improve strategies to increase the PAS among co-workers in the logistics department at IKEA in Aarhus, Denmark.
