Entwicklung und Validierung eines Voxel-basierten Bildverarbeitungstools zur dreidimensionalen SUV-Analyse von onkologischen PET-Studien

Abstract

dc:description

Many clinical applications of positron emission tomography profit from a quantitative assessment of pathological lesions. The standardised uptake value (SUV) allows for a semiquantitative assessment of the regional glucose consumption. This parameter can be helpful to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions, for therapy monitoring, and for the assessment of prognosis. Evaluating average and maximum SUVs from three-dimensional PET scans as well as lesion volume requires a computational differentiation between lesion and its background. In the context of this study an algorithm was developed which performs a genuine three-dimensional and reproducible segmentation and evaluation of lesions with increased radionuclide uptake by means of a region growing principle. The application has been implemented into the ECAT-7 software system of the ECAT EXACT 922/47 PET scanner (Siemens-CTI, Knoxville, TN). The algorithm has been evaluated and validated with phantom studies as well as with the results from computed tomography in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer.
