Streptococcus pneumoniae mediated negative regulation of CD8+ T cell effector function

Abstract

Infection with influenza A virus (IAV) can lead to increased susceptibility to subsequent bacterial infection, often with Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn). Clinical and experimental data indicate increased disease severity when a coinfecting agent is present during IAV infection, indicating the need to understand how the presence of a coinfecting pathogen can modulate the ongoing adaptive CD8+ T cell response to IAV.
