THE EFFECTS OF RARE GENETIC VARIANTS AND GENETIC ANCESTRY ON DRUG RESPONSE AND SEVERITY IN AIRWAYS DISEASES
Abstract
dc:description.abstractBackground: Genetic studies in asthma and COPD have identified common genetic variants that explain a small proportion of inter-individual variability in drug response and severity. Genetic ancestry could be associated with disease severity in individuals from recently admixed ethnic groups, such as African Americans where a higher percentage of African ancestry was associated with lower lung function. Rare genetic variants (allele frequency <0.05) with strong effects and genetic ancestry have the potential to be genetic factors that determine drug response and severity in asthma and COPD.
