Innate Immunity to Listeria monocytogenes Infection: Regulation of Dendritic Cell and Neutrophil Responses by MyD88 and the Type I IFN Receptor

<italic>Listeria monocytogenes (Lm)</italic> is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that is of consequence to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. Exploiting a niche, <italic>Lm</italic> gains access to the host cell cytosol via the pore forming toxin listeriolysin O (LLO) and infects a variety of cell types including dendritic cells (DC). Our laboratory and others have shown that optimal DC maturation occurs when <italic>Listeria</italic> gain access to the host cytosol, and this correlates with protective immunity.
