Does Mondia whitei play a role in the treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia?
Abstract
dc:description.abstractProstate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia are two of the most prevalent urological disorders affecting aging men worldwide. Conventional treatments including androgendeprivation therapy, 5α-reductase inhibitors, and surgery, are effective but often associated with adverse effects that compromise quality of life. Although these conventional treatments are effective, they are often associated with adverse effects such as sexual dysfunction, hormonal imbalance and lower urinary tract symptoms, resulting in a reduced quality of life. This has increased scientific interest in plant-derived therapeutics that are capable of modulating prostate physiology while preserving normal reproductive function. Mondia whitei is a traditionally used medicinal plant in sub-Saharan Africa, that reportedly possesses androgenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective properties. However, the potential role of Mondia whitei in the prevention or treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia has not been scientifically established.
