Background. Hand hygiene is the most important measure to prevent the spread of hospital infections in healthcare institutions, but low hand rub consumption in supportive treatment and nursing (ST&N) hospitals reflects inadequate hand hygiene in these hospitals. The aim of the study: To assess hand hygiene compliance of healthcare workers in supportive treatment and nursing hospitals. Objectives of the study: 1. To assess the compliance of healthcare workers with general hand hygiene requirements in the supportive treatment and nursing hospital X. 2. To assess the compliance of healthcare workers with the hand hygiene requirements according to the hand hygiene moments in the supportive treatment and nursing hospital X. 3. To assess the feasability of enforcing hand hygiene compliance and the causes of inadequate hand hygiene of healthcare workers in Lithuanian supportive treatment and nursing hospitals. Methodology. The assessment of hand hygiene compliance in ST&N hospital X was carried out using data from the 2022-2023 hospital hand hygiene assessments. A survey of Lithuanian ST&N hospitals was carried out to assess the feasibility of enforcing hand hygiene compliance and the main reasons for inadequate hand hygiene. The questionnaire was sent by e-mail to 36 hospitals, 15 responded. The response rate was 41,67 %. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using „Excel“, „WinPepi“ and „R Commander“. Results. At ST&N hospital X, 39,60 % of the staff did not comply with the general hand hygiene requirements. The most common non-compliances were varnished nails and wearing a watch. Compliance with hand hygiene requirements, as measured by hand hygiene moments, was 50,43 %. Compliance was highest after contact with the patient‘s body fluids (79,17 %) and lowest before contact with the patient (42,75 %). Availability of hand rub is ensured in all Lithuanian ST&N hospitals. Inadequate employees‘ hand hygiene is mainly due to the excessive use of gloves (47,67 %) and the non-compliance of general hand hygiene (long, varnished nails – 40,00 %, wearing hand jewellery – 33,33 %). Conclusions. Hand hygiene compliance of healthcare workers at supportive treatment and nursing hospital X is insufficient, with 39,60 % of workers failing to comply with the general hand hygiene requirements and only 50,43 % of workers complying with the hand hygiene requirements in terms of hand hygiene moments. In Lithuanian supportive treatment and nursing hospitals there are enough opportunities for good hand hygiene, but the main causes of inadequate hand hygiene are the exessive use of gloves and non-compliance with general hand hygiene requirements (having long, varnished nails and wearing jewellery).
