COVID-19 In Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease - Complications, Risk Factors and Mortality // COVID-19 при пациенти с краен стадий бъбречна недостатъчност – усложнения, рискови фактори и смъртност

The infection caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has triggered a global health crisis with profound medical, social, and organisational consequences. Since the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 has become one of the most significant challenges facing modern medicine, putting healthcare systems around the world under pressure and requiring the adaptation of clinical practices to the dynamically changing epidemiological environment. Patients with chronic diseases have been particularly affected. Among the most vulnerable groups of patients are patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing chronic haemodialysis. Chronic uraemia is associated with complex disorders in the immune system. In addition, patients on chronic haemodialysis are often elderly and have many comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus. All these factors put them at particularly high risk when exposed to SARS-CoV-2. This study followed patients on chronic haemodialysis undergoing the same treatment at St. Marina University Hospital – Varna in the period 2020-2022. The impact of COVID-19 infection on the quality of dialysis, the impact of dialysis quality on the frequency of complications in COVID-19, the survival of patients on chronic hemodialysis, as well as risk factors in patients on chronic hemodialysis and COVID-19 infection were monitored.
