Lymph Nodes in Maxillofacial Surgery – In the Norm and Most Common Diseases // Лимфни възли в лицево-челюстната хирургия – в норма и най-чести заболявания

This thesis examines lymph nodes in the maxillofacial region, focusing on their anatomy, physiological function, and pathological changes in common diseases. A comprehensive analysis of patients with lymph node diseases of the head and neck, hospitalised and treated at the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Marina University Hospital – Varna, Bulgaria, for a ten-year period (2015-2024), was carried out. The patients were distributed into nine main diagnostic groups. The demographic characteristics of the studied contingent were compared by clinical diagnosis, gender, age, and the dynamics of cases over time, as well as by treatment type (operative or conservative). Special attention was paid to acute purulent infectious diseases of the lymph nodes, and the bacterial pathogens and their etiological spectrum were studied. Based on the microbiological studies conducted, a detailed analysis of antibiotic resistance was made, with an emphasis on differences by gender and age. The thesis also examines the metastatic involvement of the cervical lymph nodes, which is of key importance for the diagnosis, staging and treatment of malignant diseases in the maxillofacial region. The results of the study contribute to a deeper understanding of the clinical significance of the regional lymph nodes of the head and neck and help optimise diagnostic and treatment approaches in patients with maxillofacial pathology.
