Relationship of Periodontal Status and Periodontal Infection with Coronary Artery Disease // Връзка на пародонталния статус и пародонталната инфекция с коронарната болест

The thesis examines the relationship between coronary artery disease and periodontitis. Both diseases are extremely common worldwide, and a relationship between the two has been discussed for decades, without any definitive proof. We investigated the relationship between the severity of periodontal disease, measured by clinical indicators of periodontal status, and the severity of coronary disease, measured by the SYNTAX score, in 199 patients. The influence of infection with three known periodontal pathogens: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola, on periodontal and cardiac clinical indicators was also investigated. We found that the severity of periodontitis is associated with a more frequent presence of coronary artery atherosclerosis, and the amount of P. gingivalis in subgingival plaque correlates with the levels of C-reactive protein in the blood. The results of the study support the hypothesis of periodontal infection as a risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease and establish P. gingivalis as a mediator of systemic inflammation in the body. The study emphasises the need for enhanced periodontal prophylaxis and an integrated multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of coronary artery disease.
