Relevance and Role of Nutritional Supplements in the Ophthalmology Practice // Място и роля на хранителните добавки в офталмологичната практика
Abstract
dc:descriptionPrimary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a chronic, progressive, irreversible eye disease that potentially leads to blindness, causing damage to the optic disc and neurofibrillary layer, with associated visual field defects. All available therapeutic strategies are currently limited to lowering IOP, which has been shown to improve the prognosis of the disease but does not stop its progression. There is an increasing interest among researchers in studying alternative methods of treatment and prevention of disease progression. In this regard, neuroprotection appears to be a promising aspect in addressing this disease. This thesis aims to study and document the usage of the nutritional supplements Mielooptik and Citizin, and to analyse the effect of their application as additional therapy in patients with POAG. The results suggest that the intake of the food supplements Mielooptik and Citizin (Citicoline), as an adjunctive antiglaucoma therapy, has a positive effect on the progression of POAG at different stages of the disease. There is no way to establish the long-term effect of the application of nutritional supplements with neuroprotective properties on the functional and morphological characteristics in POAG, but in any case, it would not harm to add them to the anti-glaucoma therapy.
