Obesity in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease // Затлъстяване при пациенти с хронични възпалителни болести на червата
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe prevalence of obesity in patients with IBD is significant and consistent with levels in the general population, contrary to the common perception that these patients are underweight. Although pathophysiologically obesity, and visceral obesity in particular, appears to promote intestinal inflammation, epidemiological studies implicating obesity in the development of IBD are limited. Understanding of the effects of obesity on disease severity and the development of disease complications is incomplete, and studies conducted to date (with different designs and limitations) have shown conflicting results. The investigation of novel biomarkers such as miRNAs that may control both the immune system and meta-inflammation in obesity represents an ideal candidate for the evaluation of patients with IBD and overweight or obesity. On the other hand, recently, circulating levels of human Lipocalin-2/NGAL have been successfully linked as a tool to monitor activity and response to treatment in patients with immune-mediated diseases. The absence of data combining the results of these new noninvasive markers in the study of patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease makes them a natural choice to comprehensively evaluate their role. The present study aimed to assess obesity in patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).
