Optimization of Healthcare for Cancer Patients by Distress Assessment // Оптимизиране на здравните грижи при онкологично болни чрез оценка на дистреса

Distress is a multifactorial, negative emotional experience of a psychological, social, and/or spiritual nature that can negatively affect the ability to cope effectively with cancer, its resulting physical symptoms, and treatment. Any patient diagnosed with cancer, regardless of its stage and type, who is undergoing treatment or has symptoms, experiences a certain level of distress. There is evidence that distress, depression and psychiatric disorders vary depending on a number of factors. Distress also affects the family members of the cancer patient. Screening and early efficacious treatment have the potential to reduce psychosocial distress not only for patients but also for their relatives. The analysis of the literary sources shows that in our country, the studies on distress in patients with oncological diseases, the assessment of problems in their daily lives, and the role of the oncology nurse have not been comprehensively studied and systematized. Assessing distress in cancer patients is a prerequisite for optimizing nursing care. The clarification of the role of the oncology nurse in the assessment of distress in patients with oncological diseases, revealing the difficulties and problems in nursing practice, reveals the opportunities for improving the condition of the patient with cancer and increasing his or her quality of life.
