Abstract

dc:description

This thesis is focused on the study of bronchial asthma as a present-day disease with socially significant implications and pharmacists’ contribution in providing comprehensive patient care. The global burden of asthma can be significantly reduced through the collaborative efforts of patients, health care professionals, health care institutions and governments. Various studies establish pharmacists’ important role in providing patient education and patient counselling on the rational use of medicines, thus enhancing the therapeutic regimen compliance and improving the treatment outcomes. This is of particular importance for the paediatric population since the child health care quality is strongly dependent on the collaboration between pharmacists and parents. Drug-related issues in children with asthma, the level of disease control and its effect on the quality of life in paediatric patients, as well as the role of pharmacists in the prevention and management of childhood asthma, have so far not been studied in Bulgaria. The aim of this thesis is to study the use of medications and the role of the pharmacists in providing assistance to the physicians to improve the quality of life in children with bronchial asthma in the city of Varna. Drug use analysis establishes an upward trend in the consumption of asthma medicines for children, mainly as a result of the increased morbidity among school-age children and the improved access to treatment associated with higher levels of drug reimbursement. The thesis incorporates new ideas and approaches that may be helpful for the professionals in pharmaceutical science and practice. Its substantial contribution is the feasible implementation of the developed approach focused on the pharmacist activities in providing comprehensive care for paediatric patients with asthma. The pharmacist activities are viewed as an effective way to optimize the therapeutic care, and to improve patient health status and patient quality of life. It provides recommendations to the institutions, the academic community and the health care professionals for the purposes of maintaining better disease control.
