Math Games in Teaching Resources in Grade 1-6 Education in China and Canada

This research investigates the current state of math games' design and uses in Grades 1-6 Education in China and Canada. By analyzing math games in teaching resources, this study examines similarities and differences between math games in both countries and identifies principles used to create such math games. This study employs a qualitative research approach based on constructivist and social constructivist learning theories. Thematic analysis is used to examine the design and use of math games in China and Canada. This research shows that although there are more math games in Canada than in China, particularly digital ones, math games in both countries share similar characteristics. They are most commonly used in the early grades (Grades 1 to 3), with over half focusing on number skills. Calculation-based games are the most prevalent, while games addressing other mathematical areas, such as geometry, algebra, and statistics, are comparatively rare. Many games incorporate hands-on materials, engaging contexts, and elements of student autonomy to help students engage with mathematical concepts. However, most remain at a basic level and primarily use question-and-answer formats to reinforce fundamental skills, lacking connecting structures and relationships between concepts, and offering limited links to big mathematical ideas. This research contributes to our understanding of games in grades 1-6 mathematics education in China and in Canada and may support the future work of educators, curriculum makers, game designers, and researchers.
