Preference between audio-visual recorded performance and audio-only recorded performance

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This research explores whether subjects have a preference for an audio-only (AO) presentation or an audio-visual (AV) presentation of the same piece of music. The research was conducted in two parts as a pilot study and as a main study. In the pilot study, the adult subjects were directed to the website YouTube where they listened to an audio and an audio-visual recording. During each presentation, the subjects ranked segments at 30-second intervals on a Likert scale from strongly-dislike to strongly-like. Using x2, a statistically significant difference was found in the “Dislike” category with a x2 of 14.44 and the “Strongly Like” category with a x2 of 10.424 in favor of audio-visual type presentations. In the main study, fourth- and fifth-grade subjects listened to AO and AV presentations of excerpts from eight pieces of music in varying styles. There was a statistically significant difference between AV and AO results: unpaired t-test, t = 3.1422, df = 14, p = < .05.
