NOMAD ART Traversing smooth and striated spaces in textile practice

Abstract

dc:description

This practice-led research explores textile-making as a form of nomadic art through the lens of Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of “nomadology.” The study investigates the dynamic between “smooth” spaces (exemplified by boundless deserts where nomads dwell) and “striated” spaces (characterised by the linear, bounded logic of settled states), as manifested in textile processes. The investigation focuses specifically on felt-making and weaving as distinct expressions of smooth and striated space, respectively. This framework emerged through reflective practice, particularly in observing how escaping warp threads in weaving mirror Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts of “lines of flight” and “hyperstitial space”. By examining the interplay between these textile techniques, the research explores how materials and processes can transcend traditional spatial boundaries. The methodology combines hand weaving, felt-making, and other textile techniques, with particular emphasis on the textile tent structure as a metaphor for nomadic existence and the intersection of art, textile, and architecture. Through this exploration, the study offers fresh insights into spatial division and boundary-making in societal structures, while establishing new connections between art, textiles, law, and architecture. The resulting practice outcomes provide novel pathways for future creative arts engagement with nomadic strategies.
