An assessment of the causes of cognitive dissonance in the working environment of the hospitality industry

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate the possible existence of cognitive dissonance in the working environment of a Las Vegas Hotel/Casino's Food and Beverage department. A chronological and evolutionary base for the concept of cognitive dissonance was provided through an extensive, but pointed, review of literature; A survey in two parts was used to determine the existence of cognitive dissonance. The first part consisted of a ten factors instrument, previously administered, to identify management misperceptions. The second part of the survey consisted of a follow-up interview in which employees were allowed to give their opinions in their own words; Along with the literature review and survey results, the study includes a discussion of Dr Gerald Goll's Management By Values construct which was used to assess the organizational environment of the selected property. Recommendations for future research in this area of study are also provided.
