A Gathering of Voices: Storytelling with Nilo Cruz and Students in the Urban Core

“A Gathering of Voices: Storytelling with Nilo Cruz and Students in the Urban Core” examines the importance of storytelling and the impact it can have in our lives through theatre, literature, and our own context and experiences. Chapter One covers the origins of Nilo Cruz and the impact moving from Cuba to the United State has had in his storytelling and theatrical career. Chapter Two focuses on the text analysis of Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Anna in the Tropics and how storytelling can change the lives of all characters involved as a lector reads aloud Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina to a group of cigar workers in 1920s Tampa, Florida. Chapter Three provides dramaturgical elements for the play Anna in the Tropics. The last chapter covers my sessions with local urban high school students in the Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, area. In these sessions, we deal a lot with storytelling and how it can help build bridges between race, class, and gender issues in a high school setting.
