Chapter One covers the origins of Nilo Cruz and the impact moving from Cuba to the United State has had in his storytelling and theatrical career. Chapter Two focuses on the text analysis of Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Anna in the Tropics and how storytelling can change the lives of all characters involved as a lector reads aloud Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina to a group of cigar workers in 1920s Tampa, Florida. Chapter Three provides dramaturgical elements for the play Anna in the Tropics. The last chapter covers my sessions with local urban high school students in the Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, area.
