The mediatization of educational policies in Chile: discourses and governance in a neoliberal education field
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis is an interdisciplinary study, because it focuses on the relationship between the education and media fields via a case study of the 2011 Chilean student movement. I have studied the mediatization of educational policies in Chile, using Critical Discourse Analysis as a qualitative research method. I have analyzed editorials and columns published by the two most influential newspapers in Chile to identify major discourses about education in a country with one of the most segregated educational system in the world. In addition, I have analyzed FECH’s Facebook page to illustrate how mobilized students contested hegemonic discourses in Chilean education. Finally, I have conducted interviews with education journalists in order to examine how they fashion their newsworthy criteria about educational policies. This dissertation suggests that the walls maintaining the boundaries around contemporary educational systems have all but collapsed under the weight of powerfully commodifying discourses generated via electronic mediatization. In effect, the mass media have imploded into education beyond the classroom. As this study shows, the interactions between the fields of education and the media are complex. The mediatization of educational policies is a line of work in expansion that can enhance the analysis of education policies and the role of the media as political actors in that field. With this research, I hope to demonstrate the socially constructed nature of policy making and to hint at its essential porosity in the new age of neoliberal globalization.
