Malay Natives and New Citizens: Negotiating Cultural Citizenship in Malaysia

Part I discusses theoretical concerns and perspectives and outlines a general historical overview of Melaka, and to some extent of Malaysia. Part II describes constructions of diverse social identities and their interconnections in the social relational system. Part II also demonstrates how identity schemata are tied together with other notions to construct cultural frameworks of Malaysian society. Part III describes and analyzes public celebrations and representations organized and sponsored by the government and private sectors and religious festivals in sacred spaces. Part IV discusses the negotiation of qualitative citizenship in regard to patterns of social relations. Part V analyzes contested discourses of belonging and resolution of the tensions posed by the internalization of contradictory notions of the national community.
