Innovative developments in MS continue to increase the complexity of biological systems amenable for study and provide exciting research opportunities at interdisciplinary boundaries. The doctoral studies presented here have furthered the understanding of the biosynthesis of key natural products produced by NRPSs and PKSs. Valuable information has been attained by intersecting interests in pharmacognosy with enzymology and by pushing the limits of current analytical technologies. Further, this research has solidified an intellectual framework to enhance the bioengineering of novel catalysts for creation of new biologically relevant compounds.
