Experimentation During Emerging Adulthood: A Qualitative Analysis

In sum, students described a purposeful process of experimentation that was consistent across behavioral domains. However, each behavioral domain provided unique opportunities for learning. Thus, from the perspective of emerging adults, substance use, alcohol use, and sexual activity, which have typically been identified as negative risk-taking, may afford youth positive developmental opportunities. These findings have many implications for research and for outreach with both youth and families.
