On Path Independence of Axially Loaded Wire Rope Strands
Abstract
dc:descriptionHowever, as will be shown, Costello's linearized load-strain expressions for an axially applied force and twisting moment do not satisfy exactly the requirement that, for an elastic system, the work of the applied loads be path independent. In the present study the constitutive load-deformation relationships used by Costello are investigated to determine if these relationships can be modified so that the resulting load-strain expressions meet the requirement of path independence. Additionally, parametric linearized load-strain expressions are developed for a simple straight strand, a multilayer strand, and a three-wire strand to assess the relationship between various strand parameters and path independence for these three cases.
