Kinematics and Kinetics of Granular Mixture: Experimental and Numerical Studies

Additionally, kinetic properties are investigated for a few cases, primarily computationally. Specifically, the sources and sinks of energy are investigated---the major dissipation of energy is found to be frictional sliding. Additionally, the distribution of forces in the solid-like bulk and the fluid-like flow are investigated for different mixtures---for all cases, the probability distribution function of the forces decays exponentially, though the exponent is mixture-dependent. Finally, both kinematics and kinetics of granular materials are investigated for shallow flows in a drum and compared with a model system for debris flow. Both the simulation and experimental model of dry debris flow show understanding the segregation in a granular mixture is important for predicting erosion and hazard potential in coarse debris flows.
