Marker-Qtl Associations: Comparisons of Genetic Background Effects in Maize

The third chapter was a study of the usefulness of several multivariate statistical techniques not commonly used in crop sciences for identification of marker alleles associated in some manner to QTL. Data from the S$\sb {4:6}$ lines per se and crosses to the Stiff Stalk and Lancaster testers were used for three traits. K-Means clustering and biplots, a form of perceptual mapping, were used. K-Means clustering is a useful tool for identifying favorable and unfavorable profiles of alleles across traits. Biplots were difficult to interpret because of the large number of data points.
