Political Commitment: A Sartrean Civic Virtue

While the first half of this work articulates and defends the claim that Sartrean political commitment is a cogent notion of political responsibility, the later half argues for the feasibility and desirability of promoting commitment. Empirical and analytical considerations alike indicate that decentralized civil, social and political groups are excellent sources of commitment. Thus, the social implications of Sartrean political commitment harmonize with the tradition of American civic republicanism, which holds that civic virtue is the foundation of a well-ordered, democratic society. Political commitment is not out of place in Anglo-American thinking; in fact, the Sartrean virtue should be seen as an important contribution to the ethical vocabulary of American democracy.
