Communication, Gender Identity, Stigma, and Relational Uncertainty Among Male and Female Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract

dc:description

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious social problem. This research provides an initial step toward understanding the communication surrounding IPV victimization. This study examined communication, gender identity, stigma, and relational uncertainty for victims of IPV. Former victims ( N = 345, n = 106 males, n = 239 females) of IPV in heterosexual, romantic relationships participated in a quantitative, online, retrospective, self-report study. Results indicated that men and women differed in their IPV experiences and reactions to abuse. However, people's IPV experiences and outcomes corresponded more with IPV types (i.e., psychological versus physical), IPV relationships (i.e., situational couple violence versus intimate terrorism), and gender (i.e., femininity versus masculinity) than with biological sex. The study concludes with a discussion of how the results both reinforce and challenge current theorizing about IPV, gender, stigma, and relational uncertainty.
