A Commentary on the Fragments of Anaxandrides
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis work provides an edition of the fragments of Anaxandrides together with a detailed commentary on them. Particular attention is given to elucidating the nature of his work and situating it within the historical context of the fourth century B.C. and the literary context of Middle Comedy generally. Evidence is provided to support the notion that Anaxandrides was both an important comic poet during his lifetime and influential on the development of later comedy. This study is an attempt to make sense of the transition from Aristophanes to Menander by means of a detailed analysis of one representative poet.
