Reconstructing the Merovingian Cemetery of Butte Des Gargans, Houdan, France: The Documents of Auguste Moutie and Paul Guegan Considered With the Collections of the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures and the Musee d'Art Et d'Histoire De Dreux

Abstract

dc:description

From the artifacts remaining and the details gleaned from the Moutie manuscript it is evident that this cemetery was in continuous use, probably by Gallo-Romans and also laeti from the fourth to the seventh centuries, and follows the patterns known in rural cemeteries in the Paris basin. Appendices contain the original text, texts relating to other excavations by Moutie, the museum correspondance surrounding the purchase, as well as catalogued items from other Moutie excavations. A series of plates illustrating the artifacts and the Guegan watercolors is also included.
