The Temple Terracottas of Etruscan Orvieto: A Vision of the Underworld in the Art and Cult of Ancient Volsinii
Abstract
dc:descriptionIncorporating both Etruscan as well as Greek myth, the themes selected for their cultic structures may also have been reflected in numerous locally produced small-scale works, many with ritual connotations which highlights the consistency in the visual language employed by local artists in the service of cult. In this way, the temple terracottas of Etruscan Orvieto provide a case study for visual imagery and cult, with an emphasis on its chthonic aspect, in one of the most preeminent of Etruscan cities.
