Variation in Photosynthesis and Its Consequences for Fitness

While the adaptive significance of ecophysiological traits is commonly inferred from comparative studies, linkages between photosynthesis, growth, and reproduction have remained poorly understood. I have shown that photosynthesis contributes fitness, through relatively small effects on growth throughout development. This indirect selection may be a primary mechanism enabling the evolution of photosynthetic traits.
