Variation in Photosynthesis and Its Consequences for Fitness
Abstract
dc:descriptionWhile the adaptive significance of ecophysiological traits is commonly inferred from comparative studies, linkages between photosynthesis, growth, and reproduction have remained poorly understood. I have shown that photosynthesis contributes fitness, through relatively small effects on growth throughout development. This indirect selection may be a primary mechanism enabling the evolution of photosynthetic traits.
