Elevated Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Ozone Concentrations Alter Leaf Area Index Through Changes in Leaf Production and Expansion
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis research has shown that although elevated [CO2] increased LAI in aspen and soybean, the mechanisms for the change differed between the species. Leaf number was increased by elevated [CO2] in aspen, whereas individual leaf size was increased in soybean. Aspen and soybean had similar responses to elevated [O3]. Most previous research has ignored the potential effects of O3 on young leaves and leaf growth; however, this research showed that elevated [O3] altered growth properties of young soybean leaves and had indirect, lasting effects on leaf growth and function in aspen. While there was evidence that elevated [CO 2] protects from elevated [O3], there were also notable exceptions, indicating that elevated [CO2] will not always cancel the negative effects of elevated [O3] on leaf growth and canopy structure.
