Morphometric Approaches to Analysis of Microevolution: Morphologic Variation in Paleozoic Bryozoa

Temporal variation is recognized among stratigraphically separated populations. Colonies become more gracile through time, but populations are not ecotypes tracking favorable environmental conditions. Characters describing zooidal living chambers contribute more to the discrimination of populations through time, and shifts occur in interdependent character responses. Unidirectional temporal morphologic trends are expressed among individual characters and among all populations analyzed concurrently. These trends continue across five sampled intervals despite fluctuating environmental conditions.
