Abstract
dc:descriptionCollectively, the studies reported in this dissertation demonstrate that honey bee P450s associated with detoxification are few in number, that these P450s appear to have evolved to respond specifically to natural compounds encountered in the hive environment, and that honey bees have a limited capacity to metabolize synthetic pesticides. Certain beekeeping practices, including miticide use and artificial feeding supplements, may affect the ability of bees to process xenobiotics. Studies conducted for this dissertation suggest that deeper understanding of honey bee toxicology may contribute to improving management practices that enhance overall honey bee health.
