Moral Functioning in Sport: An Achievement Goal Perspective

When male participants perceived a performance motivational climate in their team, they were more likely to judge inappropriate behaviors as appropriate, and report the intention to engage and greater frequency of engagement in the described behaviors. They were also more likely to perceive their coach as encouraging inappropriate action and an increasing number of their teammates as willing to engage in inappropriate behaviors. Athletes' perceptions of the coach encouraging the behaviors described in the moral dilemmas and of their teammates being willing to engage in these behaviors corresponded to lower levels of moral functioning and greater approval of unsportsmanlike and intentionally injurious acts.
